Winn et al. conducted a global analysis of gene expression at the maternal-fetal interface in placental samples from women with preeclampsia versus samples from women who delivered due to preterm labor with no evidence of infection. The basal plate was dissected from the placenta proper and diced into approximately 3 mmᶾ pieces for RNA extraction. Pregnancies complicated by multiple gestations, fetal anomalies, premature rupture of the membranes, infection, diabetes, or other autoimmune diseases were excluded from the study.
