Davidson et al. compared the gene expression profiles of endotoxin-stimulated neonatal polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) and monocytes (MONOs) to elucidate inflammatory control mechanisms in the newborns. Umbilical cord blood was obtained from placentas immediately after term elective cesarean deliveries. PMNs and MONOs were separately isolated from the same blood sample and treated with 10 ng/ml LPS (endotoxin) or with PBS (vehicle) for 4 hours.
