Zhou et al. used global transcriptional profiling to explore mRNA changes that underlie cytotrophoblast (CTB) defects in preeclampsia. Villous CTBs were isolated from the placentas of women diagnosed with various forms of severe preeclampsia with or without intrauterine growth restriction, including superimposed hypertension and HELLP syndrome, and from the placentas of preterm labor patients with no signs of infection, which served as gestation-matched controls. Gene expression profiling was performed immediately after isolation and after 12, 24, and 48 hours in culture.
